The Commission Process
A one-of-a-kind piece made special for you
From an idea to something made specifically for you. A custom piece begins with a conversation.
You may have a particular piece of furniture in mind, a difficult space to furnish, a favorite piece of wood, or simply an idea that you haven’t quite figured out yet. The commission process gives us the opportunity to explore that idea together and turn it into something considered, functional, and uniquely yours.
01 — Start a Conversation
Let's discuss what you’re thinking. Share whatever you have—dimensions, photographs, sketches, inspiration, a description of the space, or simply an idea. We’ll talk about what you’re looking for, how the piece will be used, and what might be possible. Not every idea needs to arrive fully formed. That’s part of the process.
02 — Design
Once we’ve determined that your project is a good fit, we’ll begin the design process. A $100 design fee covers the initial consultation, development of a preliminary design, up to two rounds of revisions, and preparation of the final design and specifications. The design fee is credited in full toward the purchase price if you decide to commission the piece. If you decide not to proceed, the fee simply covers the time spent developing your design.
03 — Refine the Details
This is where an idea becomes a piece of furniture. We’ll work through proportion, materials, joinery, finish, and hardware. You’ll have an opportunity to review the design and request revisions before anything is built. Our goal is not simply to make what you asked for; it’s to understand what you’re trying to accomplish and develop a piece that feels right.
04 — Approve the Design
When the design is where we want it, you’ll receive the final specifications for approval. This is the point where the project moves from designing to making. Once you approve the design and submit the 30% production deposit, the design is considered final and construction can begin. Because a custom piece is built specifically for you, your approval allows for the purchase of materials, allocation of shop time, and beginning construction. Changes may still be possible, but we’ll evaluate the request based on where the project is in construction and confirm any additional cost or time before making the change.
05 — Build
Now the design leaves the drawing board. We select and prepare the materials, build the piece, refine the surfaces, and apply the finish. This is where the character of the material and the marks of the maker become part of the finished work. Because we work with solid wood and make each piece individually, the process can’t always be reduced to a precise schedule. We’ll keep you informed as your piece progresses and let you know if anything arises that materially affects the timeline.
06 — The Finished Piece
Before your piece leaves the shop, we’ll give it a final inspection and make sure it meets the approved design and our standards for craftsmanship. The remaining balance is due before delivery or pickup. Then it’s time for the part we’re all working toward: putting it in your home.
A Note About Wood
Every piece of Whisperwood furniture is made from real wood. That means no two pieces will ever be exactly alike. Grain, color, figure, mineral streaks, knots, and other natural characteristics will vary. Over time, the wood will respond to its environment and develop additional character. We don’t consider these things imperfections to be hidden. They’re part of what makes a handmade piece yours.
